The S55 twin-turbo engine powering the M2 Competition, M3, and M4 F8X uses a top-mounted water-cooled intercooler rather than a conventional air-cooled unit. The OE intercooler uses a tube-and-fin core with clamped plastic end tanks, a construction genuinely prone to cracking, either leaking coolant into the engine or leaking boost pressure out through the tank seals. do88's mission with this development was to eliminate both weak points while delivering a genuine performance increase.
Rather than guessing at fitment, do88 conducted a detailed 3D-scan of an actual M3 Competition engine bay, then trialled several design concepts in Solidworks CAD software, refined through CFD flow simulations. Notably, do88 deliberately chose not to include internal air guides after their simulations showed these caused more turbulence and disruption than benefit, despite many competitors claiming otherwise, letting the tank design distribute airflow evenly across the core on its own. The final design uses a bar-and-plate core with TIG-welded aluminium cast end tanks, switching to a dual-pass flow structure that routes coolant across the core twice rather than the OE single-pass design, with high-density offset cooling fins on both the air and water sides for maximised heat transfer.
The numbers speak for themselves: an 85% larger core volume (5657cm³ versus 3052cm³ stock), 16% higher airflow at 0.025 bar/0.36psi pressure drop, and a 9°C lower post-intercooler air temperature under identical full-throttle 0-240km/h testing at an airstrip. On the dyno with a BootMod3 Stage 1 tune, this translated to a 13hp peak gain, with midrange gains as high as 25hp and 52Nm.
Works with: OEM cooling lines and mounting points, genuine drop-in installation. Best paired with do88's Front-Mounted and Side-Mounted Radiators (sold separately) for the complete charge cooling system upgrade.
Why Choose This Intercooler
