BMW often uses plastic for their OEM charge pipes, a cost-effective choice for the manufacturer, but not always suitable for handling pressurised air over the long term. As the plastic ages, or if boost increases on a tuned car, these pipes are genuinely prone to failure. A failing charge pipe can result in reduced power (limp mode), or in more serious cases, the car may shut down entirely, requiring the pipe to be replaced before it will even start again, potentially leaving you stranded.

Many aftermarket charge pipe kits exist for the B48, but in do88's assessment, most aren't properly designed, typically just two pipes joined by a straight reducing silicone hose that fails to account for thermal expansion and contraction in the system.
