Filtration, airflow, and heat are the key considerations when designing a new intake system for a turbocharged engine. A genuine design challenge for the B48/B46 is location, the intake sits right next to the exhaust manifold, which rapidly heat soaks this position in the engine bay. High air intake temperatures are genuinely bad for engine performance, since the turbo has to build boost using hot, less dense air, making a fully sealed intake system the only way to keep IATs to a minimum. But a fully sealed system creates its own problem, a restriction from relying on only the single stock air feed at the bottom of the factory air filter box.
