CSF Honda Civic Type-R (FL5) High-Performance Oil Cooler Kit

The FL5 Civic Type R is capable of seriously impressive performance, but the Honda engineering team came up short in one specific area: oil cooling. Drivers regularly see high oil temperatures even completely stock, and considerably higher on modified examples. In CSF's own testing, temperatures exceeded 275°F (135°C) on track, well beyond the 250°F ceiling most engine builders recommend before bearing materials start losing strength and load-bearing capacity. It was clear the FL5 needed a genuine solution, so CSF set out to develop their first ever complete engine oil cooler kit.

The engineering challenge was twofold: the K20C1 has no external oil cooler provision from the factory, and the front bumper opening is already packed with the intercooler, A/C condenser, and radiator competing for the same limited airflow. CSF's answer places two dual-pass, bar/plate core coolers (13in x 4.5in each) at the sides of the bumper, the optimal position, but one with poor natural airflow on this platform, solved with a dedicated ducting and inlet system plus motorsport-grade prepreg carbon fibre bumper vents that direct air to the coolers while matching the FL5's aggressive styling. CPE-lined stainless steel braided lines with quick-release fittings and a billet sandwich plate housing a 175-195°F thermostat complete the system, increasing total oil capacity to approximately 7 quarts (6.6L) for genuinely improved thermal stability. CSF spent over a year testing and developing this kit with drivers competing in major time attack and endurance series, moving from controlled dyno testing into real-world track validation, and delivering an average oil temperature reduction of approximately 15°F (8°C). One competition car running this kit posted a class lap record at Circuit of the Americas and reported no major overheating issues across a full season.
